Overview
Aortic Valve Repair & Replacement
Aortic valve repair and replacement are surgical procedures used to treat damaged or diseased aortic valves. The aortic valve, one of the four heart valves, is located between the left ventricle and the aorta, the body’s main artery.
Heart valves ensure blood flows correctly through the heart. When the heart contracts, the aortic valve opens, allowing blood to flow from the left ventricle into the aorta. When the heart relaxes, the valve closes to prevent blood from flowing backward.
A diseased or damaged aortic valve can disrupt this process, making the heart work harder to pump blood to the rest of the body. Repairing or replacing the valve can improve blood flow, alleviate symptoms of heart valve disease, and potentially extend the patient’s life. These procedures can be performed through open-heart surgery or minimally invasive techniques.
